The spas at New York-New York, Treasure Island and MGM Grand Detroit offer a spirtual and sensual journey around the world.

If you've dreamt of a relaxing, exotic journey that traverses oceans and continents, but haven't quite found the time to make it, there is an option. It takes no more than an hour or two and could even be better than the real thing: no jet lag, no language barrier and no foreign nuances to which you must become accustomed.

This option is, of course, a visit to a spa. More often, as spas draw influence from different cultures in their treatments and design, one can experience the far reaches of the world simply by booking an appointment. And cultural exploration aside, a spa day is good for the soul.

It has become a transcendent experience marked by near reverence. Who wouldn't be elated at the prospect of an hour or two of pure bliss? But there's something more at work. Have we finally accepted the body is indeed a temple and must be treated accordingly? After all, spas cultivate tranquility: Ambient features encourage introspection, one might even dare say, meditation whilst rituals are performed to cleanse the body of toxins and tension.

A spa provides rest for the weary. And the wicked. Because let's face it, while there is no better way to re-hydrate, recharge and relax, there is also no better place to recover from a night on the town. Here are three mini-escapes featuring rituals that offer a taste of different cultures as well as a reprieve from the stresses of the modern world…even if only for an hour or two.

The Zenicure at The Spa at New York-New York polishes not only your nails, but also your skin with the healing properties of green tea. This ubiquitous beverage is revered in Japan for its antioxidant powers and starring role in sacred tea ceremonies. Featuring green tea-infused products such as foaming salts and body butter, this treatment soothes and moisturizes much used-and-abused feet.

Natural ingredients like sea salt draw impurities from the skin, while quick penetrating sweet almond oil and emollients like mango seed butter protect skin cells and soothe rough skin. This treatment takes the common pedicure and elevates it to a Zen-like encounter, and since it's offered in a private manicure/pedicure room, you can tune out from the hustle and bustle and tune in to yourself.

The recently redesigned spa draws upon natural elements for the ultimate meditative environment: a warm, earthy palette is balanced against sea greens. Soft crystal lighting illuminates cool slate, glossy wood and polished river rock. In the resting room, flowing water trickles and bubbles for a calming auditory experience.

The Spa at New York-New York is open daily 6:30 a.m. - 8 p.m. For more information or to book an appointment, call 702-740-6955 or visit nynyhotelcasino.com.
