Fazio’s Latest Masterpiece
By Scott Gummer
Q: How did Hurricane Katrina affect the project?
A: We were in the grassing phase and pretty close to finished. There was extensive damage to the trees, shrubs and bushes, plus we lost power and could not irrigate, then we had to wait a full year for the next growing season. But wait ‘til you see it; it has come through beautifully.
Q: What are the most distinctive features of the golf course?
A: The golf course is an oasis in the middle of a forest. Most of the land in the region is fairly flat, but this piece features gorgeous rolling terrain, elevation changes, hills, valleys, and ravines. It’s stunning and dramatic.
Q: Which is the toughest hole?
A: Number 18 is a strong finishing hole. It’s a 480-yard, par four that plays from an elevated tee down the right side of a ravine to a green marsh set above a pretty but penalizing marsh. The big oak tree, for which the course is named, sits in the right rough at the landing area.
Q: Which is the prettiest hole?
A: That will be the question golfers debate in the clubhouse after their round. It’s a tough one because there are so many picturesque holes and such great variety of vegetation and elevation. I cannot pick just one.
Q: What will surprise people about the area who have never been to that part of the country?
A: The quality of the product itself. I am very proud of the work my team did in creating an exceptional golf course, but the whole experience is superb. People who think the area is flat and uninteresting are in for a pleasant surprise. The views, the beauty, the golf, the facilities, and amenities…from the moment you pull into the Fallen Oak driveway, you know you have arrived someplace special.
