Shake It Up, Baby!

Story By Natasha Garber, Photography By Peter Harasty

Since the perfect martini is always shaken not stirred, says Fish, great shakers are “a most important accessory.” They also can add elegance and excitement to your bar. Pick up a silver-plated classic, or search out whimsical versions patterned with “highheeled shoes, olives with red-rhinestone pimientos, sports motifs, animals, cards, dice, or musical instruments.” Match them with novel martini-theme coasters, cocktail napkins and unique garnish holders. Even garnishes themselves can do double duty as bar decor, especially when they take the form of bright lemon-peel spirals, gleaming cherries, juicy olives stuffed with blue cheese or jalapeños, and cinnamon or rock-candy sticks, along with baubletopped swizzles.

Looking for action? Turn up the volume of your martini bash with music and movement. Hire a professional pianist, or recruit “the sultry sound of a glam-girl torch singer,” Fish suggests. If live entertainment doesn’t fit your mood or budget, set the tone with “the sensuous sounds of saxophones, moody ’40s music, jazz, Sinatra or retro tunes on CD.”

No matter how simple or extravagant a martini party you plan, plan it right, Fish says. “Details make the difference, and organization is key. Make up a checklist, inclusive of every party detail. Invite guests three weeks prior to the party. Have candles ready to light, and flowers and decor in place six hours prior to party time. Hiring a bartender and servers is also a good idea and can make hosting your party more relaxed.”

And don’t forget: “Have plenty of ice! The real secret to a good martini is temperature,” Fish insists. “Glistening ice chips float over the top of the martini when the temperature is absolutely perfect.” As for the secret to a good martini party? “Passion,” Fish says. And with more than 20 years of event design experience under her belt, the queen of the Las Vegas event scene knows what she’s talking about. “Put enthusiasm, flair and good taste into every detail so that your martini party will be one that guests will talk about for weeks. And toast to love, life and bright tomorrows!”
