Non-golfers should check out the shopping in George Town. There is no sales tax, and duty-free merchandise is as much as 30 percent off U.S. prices. The best souvenir is a framed photograph by Cathy Church, one of the world’s top underwater photographers; visit her gallery at Sunset House. Also, be sure to bring home Tortuga or Blackbeard’s rum, and a delicious rum cake.
When you get hungry from all the activ ity, try Caymanian cuisine featuring conch, lobster, fish and turtle (the national dish now farmraised). At the Cracked Conch by the Sea on Grand Cayman, you’ll find local conch and turtle dishes on the menu and a great sunset view from the deck.
For nightlife, it’s not Las Vegas, but it does have its charm.
You can take a sunset cruise or moonlight dinner cruise on the
Jolly Roger and other boats. Or, hop the 45-minute ferry over
to Rum Point for drinks or dinner and return under the stars. But
for many, the darkness means another opportunity to get back into
the water, either on a night submarine ride, scuba dive or snorkel
trip. “The ocean is completely different by night,” says Kipp.
“The water glows and sponges become fluorescent. Octopus, tarpon
and moray eels hunt prey while other fish go to sleep so you can
get close to them for photographs. It’s eerie and intriguing,” he
adds.
