Shaquille O'Neal moves East …
with a stopover in Las Vegas.
Story By Scott Gummer Photography By Fernando Escovar
How about you? when you walk away from
the NBA, what would you like
your legacy to be?
The best big man ever.
What will the job title read on your next
business card?
Sheriff, ATF Agent, or Police Officer. I have been through the academy and
am a Reserve Deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
Renowned for his dapper duds, notable quotes, car and motorcycle
collections, and Superman fascination (the Man of Steel’s “S” logo
graces countless Shaq possessions, including a tattoo), Shaq is
nothing if not flamboyant. However, he is quite—but quietly— active
in the community.
Tell me about your involvement with TWIsM (the
world is mine), a clothing company you started to help the underprivileged?
We do a lot of things people don’t know about because we don’t
want people to know. When a police officer is killed, we send flowers and help
raise money for the officer’s kids. My wife has been involved at the
battered women and children shelter. TWIsM started after a lady came up to
me and told me her son wanted my shoes but she could not afford them. That
really hit me. If I asked my father for $150 shoes he would have smacked me.
