Although MGM MIRAGE has demonstrated its penchant for sustainability in the
past, the creation of the Energy and Environmental Services Division raises its
commitment to responsible governance to a new level. Future endeavors will surpass
considerable to-date accomplishments, such as becoming a leader in Las Vegas for
water conservation. Additionally, two new programs are underway which will save
23 million kilowatt hours of energy per year.
Even more remarkable is MGM MIRAGE's decision to pursue LEED certification for
Project CityCenter, an seven billion dollar development slated to open in the fourth
quarter of 2009. LEED, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is a highly
regarded accreditation established by the U.S. Green Building Council. Only companies
seeking maximum sustainable performance for their buildings, inside and out, voluntarily
work to earn this designation.
Residents, guests and employees of the magnificent 18-million-square-foot
Project CityCenter will enjoy the benefits of an on-site power plant, garden roofs,
reclaimed water, and exceptional air quality. Ortega expressed that MGM MIRAGE is
targeting an 80% reuse rate for the development and has proven true to this goal by its
management of Boardwalk Hotel & Casino's deconstruction, which was removed to make way
for the new urban community: All of Boardwalk's concrete and porcelain products have been recycled.
Stay tuned for further groundbreaking developments from the Energy and Environmental
Services Division as the corporation continues to cultivate responsible growth. As our
world progresses toward a greater sustainable future, MGM MIRAGE will do the same.
