Story by Jack Bulansky
The word delicatessen comes from the Latin word delicatus and means to delight, to give pleasure. In America, it means corned beef on rye. Wherever it came from or whatever your translation, it describes Carnegie Deli at The Mirage, Canter’s at TI and ’wichcraft at MGM Grand. Each has its own style and each seeks to delight.
Carnegie Deli
The original Carnegie Deli is as well known for serving movie stars, athletes, and politicians as it is for its pastrami and cheesecake (the best in the world). One look inside Carnegie Deli at The Mirage and you’ll see that this satellite branch is also a favorite; high rollers, Strip entertainers, casino executives, and Las Vegas visitors can be found enjoying the famous food. Aside from the great food, the feel of the restaurant is what brings them back. The Mirage Carnegie is more than a place to indulge in a delicious—and towering—sandwich; it has recreated the comfort-of-home atmosphere of the original, almost seven decades in the making. “This is a meeting place, a community,” said Sanford (please call me Sandy) Levine, president of the deli.
The smartly designed restaurant from Adam Tihany, designer of Le Cirque and Circo at Bellagio and SEABLUE at MGM Grand, is a continuation of his multi-disciplinary view of design that incorporates furniture, products, exhibitions, and graphics. “Adam knows what our place looks like in New York and he gave this one a more modern feel,” said Levine. “It's open and adds to our idea of community.” |
