Fun in the Sun Needn't Damage Your Skin

Story by Cynthia Barnes

Most people look, and feel, more attractive with a bit of color in their complexions. These days, however, warnings about skin cancer and UV rays’ contributions to premature aging have taken a lot of the fun out of sun. Fear not, help is here. Sorelax! Advances in self-tanning products and sunscreens can help you have a truly “healthy tan.”

Want to look like a golden girl in hours? Put aside all those bad memories of orange, streaky self-tanners from the ’70s and head to the spa! At Spa Bellagio, you can go from “pasty as pastry” to “brown as a biscuit” in just three hours. Their popular tanning treatment is a hit with busy celebrities and those without the time, or inclination, to bake by the pool. To ensure long-lasting and even color, exfoliation is key. A full-body polish feels great, eliminates dead skin cells and preps your complexion for an all-over glow. (Salt scrubs are also popular with clients who want to apply their own bronzer or head out to the pool.) After exfoliation, an aesthetician applies a bronzing cream by hand to ensure complete and even coverage. The result is a rich “tan” that lasts for days.

If you want the latest in high-tech tanning in even less time, try the airbrush bronzing offered by the Grand Spa at MGM Grand. The bronzing begins in the shower, where clients self-apply a gentle exfoliant. (Those wanting more pampering should book a body scrub fi rst and luxuriate in the multi-headed Vichy shower.) The spa technician consults with clients to choose the perfect shade of sun-kissed color, and then airbrushes it evenly over the body. Twenty-five minutes later, voilà! Golden color that looks like you’ve spent a month on the French Riviera. For those who simply must worship the sun one-on-one, following a few simple rules will help protect your skin from damage. Hats and sunglasses not only shield you from harmful UV rays, they make you look like an incognito movie star.
