Story by Ava Bellows
Perhaps one of the most distinctive
features, and a theme within the
community, is the acknowledgement of
the local history. Mountain's Edge has
named the parks and trails in honor of
the migratory Indian tribes, early settlers
and the people who traded goods on the
Old Spanish Trail, which passes near the
property. Recreations of petroglyphs and
pictographs can be found throughout the
community; they have even published
a book entitled A Living History, which
educates residents about the rich
heritage of the land.
Another unique feature is the
commitment to water conservation.
"When we first decided to build a
drought-tolerant community, we were
told we would never be able to sell it.
But we took a gamble and found most
people want to do the right thing. They
would rather do what is good for the
environment," said Ritter. He added
that he hoped it was a trend that would
continue within real estate development.
By promoting water conservation
- resulting in 25% less water used than
at other master planned communities -
Mountain's Edge enhances the land rather
than imposes itself on it. A groundbreaking
feature is the Demonstration Garden,
offering landscaping ideas that provide
lush flora, shade structures and color, all
with desert-compatible plants and trees.
The garden has created a paradigm shift,
redefining the landscape aesthetic and
teaching residents that beauty can be
found in the natural, desert environment.
"The feeling at Mountain's Edge is that we
need to honor the place we live and the
history of the place instead of trying to
make it something it's not," said Ritter.
