Story by Jack Sheehan
If it's fair to say that a collage of images of early 1980s
Las Vegas would include polyester leisure suits, smudged plastic
buckets of coins, far too much neon, and the names of slightly
over-the-hill celebrities dotting the marquees of Strip hotels,
today the city is home to the most beautiful and elegant hotels
on earth, the permanent residence of half a dozen of the world's
greatest chefs, and the weekend playground of the hippest and
most happening Hollywood movie stars and recording artists. In
just one month the MGM Grand Garden Arena showcased
Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones and U2. These days the
biggest acts clamor to perform in Las Vegas because they
recognize the city as the hottest entertainment venue.
Now MGM MIRAGE, which owns and operates
all three of these resorts that have redefined
Las Vegas, is set to raise the bar once again.
With Project CityCenter, a dazzling vertical city
under construction in the heart of The Strip's
sprawling horizontal grid, MGM MIRAGE is
making its grandest statement yet about the
limitless potential of Las Vegas.
"Throughout its 100-year history," says
MGM MIRAGE Chairman and CEO Terry Lanni,
"Las Vegas has been transformed repeatedly by
a series of significant developments reflecting
the creative energies of its visionary builders
and entrepreneurs. Project CityCenter represents
what we feel is a significant new direction for
our city and our company. With this world-class
development, Las Vegas is on the fast track to
becoming a major urban center in the western
United States."
Built on 66 acres between the Bellagio
and Monte Carlo resorts, in the heart of The Strip,
Project CityCenter confirms a cultural and lifestyle
revival of metropolitan living in Las Vegas.
As the country's fastest growing major city for the
last two decades, with development reaching into
every corner of the valley, land in Las Vegas
has become extremely precious in an area where it once was thought that open space was endless. Thus vertical
construction near the Las Vegas Strip has not only been deemed a necessity, but a valued commodity that has inspired
wonderful architecture and greatly enhanced the urbanization and sophistication of the entire area. |
