Roger Dubuis knows whereof
the good doctor speaks; his
watches salute the artistic
impulse as exuberantly as they do that
of the engineer.
Since establishing his own brand
in 1995, Dubuis has emerged as one
of the world's most accomplished and
uncompromising horologists. His watches,
created in collaboration with partner
Carlos Dias, are produced in the rarified
quantity of 28 pieces for any single
design. The number is significant in many
ways. As relates to time, it takes 28 days
for the moon to make a full revolution
around its own axis. In the case of
Messieurs Dubuis and Dias, 28 is the
maximum number of pieces that can be
made to their exacting standards with no
diminishment in quality.
A native of Switzerland, Dubuis
became fascinated with the national
technology at the age of 12 when he
visited a watchmaker who lived and
worked in his boyhood village of Vevey. As the frequency of the visits
increased, so did the interest with which the boy studied
the master at work. Before long, Dubuis'
course in life was set. After earning his
Certificate of Capacity and Watchmaker's
Diploma from the Geneva Watchmaking
School in 1953, he embarked on a career
that spanned 27 years with some of
Switzerland's pre-eminent watchmaking
companies. He became an independent
in 1980, specializing in restoration. It
was during this time that he struck up
an acquaintance with Carlos Dias, who
had made a name for himself as a fashion
designer in Italy. The two became friends,
and eventually formed a partnership. By
1995, they had established Manufacture
Roger Dubuis S. G. It is Dias who designs
the distinctive faces through which
Dubuis' exquisite "complications" present
themselves to the world. For a good look at a selection of inspired
time machines that would no doubt have
wowed even the estimable Mr. Wells
himself, visit Tesorini in Bellagio. |
