An elevator will whisk club patrons up to Eden, the 17,000-square-foot, Sky Bar-inspired rooftop lounge where they can cool off in the night air, gaze at San Diego’s skyline through a wall of fire or perhaps take an impromptu dip in the pool.
The restaurant, dubbed The Quarter Kitchen, will be manned by creative, British-born chef Damon Gordon who has worked for Alain Ducasse and Jeffrey Chodorow. The Quarter Kitchen will seat 220 and serve cuisine that features seasonal and exotic ingredients. Diners who book the chef’s table will find themselves engaged in a sensual repast served in bed, which is set up in the restaurant.
The wine room, with rough concrete walls lined with sought-after bottles from boutique wineries, will offer another private dining venue. Besides the 10,000 square feet of space that can be booked for business functions or weddings, Kelly envisions the rooftop dining area as an urbane setting for breakfast meetings.
After a long night of clubbing, guests can retire to soothing rooms decorated in rich, neutral tones. Each room offers supreme comforts of satiny, 300-thread-count sheets, iPod docking stations and flat screen televisions. Mini bars will be stocked with maxi-sized bottles of premium liquors. “Who wants to pay $9 for one shot?” Kelly asks.
Every guest at The Ivy will feel like a VIP, thanks to the butler service that fulfills personal requests from snagging hard-to-get dining reservations, picking up special gifts or securing limo service.
The suites and nearly a third of the guest rooms feature a few surprises such as switch-glass in the shower, which at the flip of the switch makes the shower visible to the rest of the room.
“It’s cool because it’s kind of voyeuristic and kind of funky,” Kelly says with a naughty grin.
One of the signature suites was designed by Kelly and his siblings, Louise and Richard Kelly; perhaps it’s fitting that it offers a bird’s eye view of The Bitter End, the popular Gaslamp Quarter bar where the family got their start in the hospitality business. The suite features a king-sized bunk bed and a poker table for playing Texas Hold ’em. A stripper pole, which fronts the glass-enclosed shower, is an optional amenity.
“We wanted to create a place where people can have fun,” Kelly says.
