Story by Melinda Newman
Q: When it came time to launch this collection,
what lessons did you take from launching your
men’s collections?
A: One of the things that made the men’s line
successful was starting off tight and focused. I used
that same approach in this line and was extremely
involved in every level of development to design
pieces that represented my aesthetic. It doesn’t
work if you lose focus and try to be all things
to everybody, that’s not design.
Q: Who are
your favorite designers?
A: Zac Posen, Tom Ford, Oscar de la
Renta, and Ralph Lauren.
Q: Sean John has had success very
quickly, including winning Menswear
Design at the Urban Fashion Awards in
2002. What makes a good design line?
A: It has to be new and unexplored, yet
classic and timeless. Classic with a fresh
twist. It needs to represent a lifestyle or
an ideology and the line should have
a cohesive point of view. It has to be
irresistible, where a person feels that
they have to have it. The collection
can’t be afraid to push the envelope.
It’s a balance where the line has to
be new and fresh, but maintain an
innovative integrity that stays true
to the roots of the line.
Q: You are co-executive producer with
Russell Simmons on “Run’s House.” The
MTV series follows Reverend Run from
Run-DMC. You’ve also started another
season of “Making the Band” for MTV.
How do you keep the series fresh when
there have been so many imitators?
A: “Making the Band” is the real
deal. You see the ups and downs,
the successes and failures of this
business. I think that’s why
audiences respond to it.
Q: You’ve spent a lot of time in
Vegas exploring its nightlife.
What kind of vibe do you
look for in a club?
A: The vibe has to be sexy
and the music has gotta be
on fire.
