The Las Vegan Football legend Flies like an
Eagle
Story by Scott Gummer
It is an odd sight to see Randall Cunningham sitting quietly on
a couch. The enduring image of the former UNLV and NFL star is that
of a strong-armed, strong-willed quarterback scrambling for first
downs and firing touchdowns. “Oh, I can still throw the ball,” says
Cunningham. “But, it takes me two hours to warm up and three
before I can throw a spiral!”
It has been three years since Cunningham traded his playbook for
the Good Book, leading bible study in Las Vegas. In December 2003,
Cunningham founded Remnant Ministries, a non-denominational Christian
church. “I’ve ministered to strippers, prostitutes, prisoners,
and drug addicts” Cunningham says, “but, they aren’t
the only ones who need help. If we can love others, then we can reach
others.
”Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Calif., Cunningham is the
youngest of four boys. His oldest brother, Sam (13 years Randall’s
senior), was a star running back at USC and played nine seasons in
the NFL with the New England Patriots. “I saw my brother make
it, so I never had any reason to believe I couldn’t.” Cunningham
chose UNLV over other college suitors including USC because the Rebels
had three senior quarterbacks. “I knew I would get to play
once they graduated,” he says.
