Take A Tour (and Get Some Tips) With Sportswriter
Scott Gummer
Even the most knowledgeable sportsfan can be excused for finding
the bets posted on a sports book board more confusing than this season’s
Starbucks menu. Truth be told, the sports book may be the most misunderstood
and under-appreciated game in town; the rules are simple, the minimums
low and the odds good—for winning and having fun.
The Mirage has one of the best “books” in town. The
décor is elegant, the layout spacious, the furnishings comfortable,
there are plenty of TVs scattered throughout and there is not a bad
seat in the house. “Sports Book bettors who once were intimidated
by all the facts and figures are now willing to wager largely due
to the vast amounts of information they can get from local sports
pages and the internet,” says Robert Walker, Race & Sports
Book Director at The Mirage, who has been with MGM MIRAGE for eight
years and in the trade for 18. The intimidation factor has diminished
so much so that sports book wagering accounted for a whopping $2
billion last year, with estimates for all sports betting including
online, offshore and office pools, running upwards of $400 billion.
Another reason avid bettors prefer The Mirage is the sports book
offers among the highest betting limits in town: $2,000 on NCAA basketball,
$5,000 on the NBA, $15,000 for college football, and $50,000 on NFL
games.
